DROP THE PUCK

NHL Playoffs Live- Streamed Contest

NBC Sports

OBJECTIVE

Hockey and heat don’t usually mix, but with a pandemic-adjusted NHL season, the postseason had to begin in August 2020. NBC needed a way to not only explain a new format created by unusual circumstances, but to celebrate the fact that the Stanley Cup playoffs were back.

SOLUTIONS

Playing off the theme of hockey in the height of summer, CLAMOR created an outdoor on-air set with a giant puck suspended within a 600 pound block of ice. As the ice slowly melted, the set was used in segments to explain the new format before the puck dropped on the second season. A livestream contest ran in parallel, with fans making predictions on when the puck would drop to win a visit with the Stanley Cup.

Results

The DROP THE PUCK stunt was featured on multiple segments including the TODAY Show with Commissioner Gary Bettman. Thousands of guesses were received from fans across the country for the sweepstakes and the program far exceeded expectations while earning an Ex Award for Best Use of Events for Content.
